This is the Skykomish River in Index, WA, from the deck of a cabin that my friends and I go to every now and again. Two years ago it was the inspiration for a cold, lonely river that one man had to guard with his life.

Beautiful. I've often wondered what image was in your mind. I find it fascinating that although we both have a concept of 'rivers' yours is necessarily different to mine because of our differing circumstances and experiences. Yet the image you portrayed still works for me. Can't see the 'knuckles' though. :-(
Interesting what gives us inspiration and how it's interpreted. I pictured something more like a gorge, like the 'tree spanning the cliffs' scene from King Kong. I really enjoyed the story, BTW.
This blog contains many teachable moments in writing fiction and living life, with the hard and real lessons only the joy of failure can so vividly bring.

There's three or four huge rocks just under the surface as well as the big one in the middle but that didn't come across in any of the pictures.
Just noticed the new piccie. You appear to have less hair than the last one.
Astute observation. Next year's picture will probably be even worse. Still doesn't bother me enough to wear a baseball cap all the time.

Cool, Jeff, thanks for sharing the pic.
